Commentary
90' + 6' FULL TIME: Manchester United 3-2 Newcastle United
90' + 5' Lukaku works his way into the box, beats his defender, but Fernandez recovers well to put the ball out behind for a corner, United's 10th of the match.
90' + 3' The last time Newcastle had conceded a 2+ goal lead was in December of 1998 (2-4 loss to Liverpool).
90' There will be five minutes of added time.
A. Young
Assist
90' Pogba played the ball wide to Young who curled in a cross towards Martial that seemed to be just off the mark, but Sanchez found it with his head to score what is surely the winner!
A. Sánchez
Goal
90' GOOOALLLL!!!! Young whipped the ball into Martial, who had drawn the attention of the defenders, but it makes it past them and Sanchez heads it in at the back post! Has that goal saved Jose Mourinho's job?! Manchester United 3-2 Newcastle.
Joselu
Ayoze Pérez
88' Joselu leads Newcastle in league goals this season with two. Can he find his third today?
85' Pogba sent a lovely throughball forward to Mata, but the Spaniard mistimed his run and was offside.
84' A series of corners for Newcastle now as Smalling and Matic take turns putting the ball behind and out of danger. Could it be the Magpies who find a late winner?
82' Mata crosses into Fellaini in the box but he can only get a toe on it... which takes it out of the reach of Lukaku who had been waiting behind him. Unlucky.
80' If Newcastle concede again, it would be the eighth time they've lost a match to Manchester United having scored first, matching the Premier League record.
C. Atsu
Y. Muto
78' Muto, who scored the second goal for Newcastle, is withdrawn for Atsu.
P. Pogba
Assist
76' Pogba was sat at the top of the box, headed the ball down to Martial, received a flick back, than pulled off an incredible backheel into the path of Martial who finished with aplomb!
A. Martial
Goal
76' GOOOALLLL!!!! Martial and Pogba play a one-two in the box and the latter curls in an absolute beauty at the near post, beating Dubravka! Manchester United 2-2 Newcastle.
75' Fellaini and Pogba tkae shots at goal in immediate succession before Manquillo puts the bak behind for another United corner.
71' SHOT! Matt Ritchie took a left-footed shot from very close range but it's saved by De Gea! Newcastle still boast just a one goal lead.
Mata
Goal
70' GOALLLLL!!!! MATA SCORES FROM THE FREE-KICK! His left-footed effort curled beautifully into the top-right corner past the outstretched Dubravka! Manchester United 1-2 Newcastle.
M. Diamé
Yellow Card
69' Diame took down Martial just outside the box and was shown yellow for it. Mata will take the free-kick.
Jacob Murphy
Kenedy
68' Jacob Murphy comes on for Kenedy on the left wing.
A. Sánchez
M. Rashford
67' Rashford could have had a brace, but instead is withdrawn with his side still down two goals. Alexis Sanchez makes his second substitute appearance of the season.
65' Manchester United have dominated the possession battle having had 73% of the ball. This is hardly surprising however as Newcastle currently have the lowest average percentage in the league this season (39.1%). What is surprising is that Newcastle, with so little of the ball, have actually had more shots today (11)!
P. Pogba
Yellow Card
63' Pogba raked his studs down the back of Yedlin's leg after the latter had beaten him for pace. That was a cynical challenge and the Frenchman has been shown yellow for it.
61' Rashford is fouled on the left wing by Manquillo. It will be a free-kick for Manchester United.
59' SHOT! Shelvey wins the ball in the midfield, plays Kenedy into the box... but he takes his shot early from an acute angle and it soars over De Gea's goal. Newcastle had numbers forward and he would have been better served to lay the ball off rather than going it alone.
M. Ritchie
Yellow Card
58' Ritchie took the free-kick before the referee had blown his whistle... and the former has been carded for arguing.
56' SHOT! It's a cross-fest now as Pogba sends in one of his own to Rashford who outclimbed his defender, got his head to it, and failed to put it on target. Again.
55' Martial sends in another cross from the left, this time targeting Fellaini, but the latter can't get his head to the ball and the chance goes.
53' SHOT! Martial and Lukaku combine down their left wing, pass it into Mata who unleashes a strike from range but it was wide and never troubled the goalkeeper. United have looked a much more dangerous side in the early stages of the second half!
51' SHOT! The corner is pulled back to Pogba from outside the box and he powers a shot towards Dubravka! The keeper can only parry it as far as Matic who has the whole game to aim at... and he misses! He leaned back as he shot and his effort launched far above the crossbar. That should have been a goal!
50' Shaw picks out a fantastic cross-field ball to Young who crosses into Rashford, but it's cut out and sent behind for Manchester United's eighth corner.
48' After that substitution, with only one centreback on the pitch, it's hard to make out what formation Jose Mourinho intended. At the moment, Smalling is the only player behind the halfway line while United attack!
46' We're back underway at Old Trafford! Can Manchester United fight back and get a result or will Newcastle win their first match of the season? We'll find out together!
M. Fellaini
S. McTominay
46' McTominay, who had already played in midfield and defence, has come off at the half for Marouane Fellaini.
Benitez set his side up perfectly today, and it has shown. They have sat back, allowed United to hold onto the ball, and then countered at pace any of the many times that the hosts have played a sloppy pass. The combination of Perez, Muto, and Kenedy is causing all sorts of problems for the opposing defence and could have easily combined for another goal or two. The defence has largely held well but have conceded a concerning 7 corners already, which could lead to a Manchester United goal sooner rather than later. On the whole, this is one of the best Newcastle performances of the season thus far.
What a shocking performance from Manchester United in the first half. Regardless of whether or not Mourinho's fate has already been sealed, there's really no excuse for some of the simple mistakes being made by his side. They have been able to get forward mostly through Shaw down the left wing and Pogba through the middle, but they have failed to apply any consistent pressure, save for their runs of set pieces. The defence has been shambolic and has not improved since the withdrawal of Bailly as McTominay has struggled to keep up with the like of Muto and Perez. If they score the next goal they could get back into this but, on balance of play, they don't deserve to pick up any points today.
L. Shaw
Yellow Card
45' + 2' Shaw has been carded for arguing about the uncalled hand ball.
45' + 2' HALF TIME: Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle United
45' + 2' PENALTY SHOUT! Young sent in the corner and it seemed to hit Muto's hand on the way in! Taylor doesn't deem this one a penalty either!
45' + 1' Another series of corners for the home side! Can they pull a goal back before the half?
45' There will be two minutes of added time.
44' Perez wriggles himself into the box, beats Smalling, lines up the shot, and he misses the ball! How has he managed that?!
41' PENALTY SHOUT! Perez' free-kick looks like ot deflected behind by Ashley Young, but the Newcastle players think it hit Young's arm in the box! Taylor doesn't give the penalty and has actually called it a goal kick! That's the kind of moment that will likely force people to discuss VAR at the half.
40' While that effort failed to test De Gea, Newcastle have already managed six shots on target! The last time United allowed that many shots on target in a first half was against Blackburn in 2005 (seven)!
39' It was decidedly not Newcastle's third as Matt Ritchie slipped as he lined up the shot... and it's out for a throw in!
38' Another foul from Manchester United. This time it's Young who takes Perez down just to the left of the penalty area. Could this be Newcastle's third?
36' The hosts concede another free kick in their own half and it leads to another free header, but the shot flies well above De Gea's goal.
35' SHOT! After Pogba conceded a free-kick, the ball came Muto's way and he headed it at the near post and De Gea somehow both gets to it and smothers it! Not many 'keepers could have saved that!
33' Shaw conitnues to grow in influence as he gets into the box and lays the ball off to Lukaku... but the big Belgian can't control the pass and the chance goes.
31' Muto beats McTominay for pace, waits for help, passes the ball to the top of the box, but it's cleared before it can reach it's intended target. Newcastle look very dangerous on the counter-attack thus far!
29' Shaw finds space on the left wing and plays a ball infield towards Martial, but he leaves it for Mata who had stopped his run. That was a perfect example of the disjointed play mentioned earlier.
27' Ayoze Perez is taken down in his own half by Chris Smalling. Free-kick to Newcastle now.
25' Another set piece for Manchester United leads to another free header in the box! They have looked disjointed at times, but could definitely get back into this match if one of these set pieces turns into a goal!
23' SHOT! Lukaku goes on a run down the right wing and whips in a perfectly curled cross towards Rashford who rises and heads it.... wide! Oh, he surely has to do better from there!
21' That does indeed look to be what's happening with McTominay joining the back line with the midfield three now consisting of Matic, Pogba, and Mata.
Mata
E. Bailly
19' Juan Mata does indeed enter the fray with Eric Bailly coming off. The formation could stay the same if McTominay moves back to centre-half, but we'll see!
18' SHOT! Shelvey took aim for the top right corner from outside the box, and his effort is brilliantly saved by De Gea. Hard to tell whether it was a better save or strike!
17' Mourinho is now talking to Juan Mata who has taken off his jacket. It looks as though we're going to see a substitution in the first 20 minutes of this match!
15' Manchester United now starting to apply the pressure as they have a series of corner kicks, but none lead to a goal.
12' The Newcastle fans are absolutely delighted! It should be noted, however, that Newcastle have lost seven Premier League matches when scoring first against Manchester United. Only Southampton against Man Utd and Sunderland against Chelsea (eight defeats) have lost more times when scoring first against an opponent in the history of the competition. Can they break that trend today?
J. Shelvey
Assist
10' Shelvey whipped the ball from the right wing into a crowded Manchester United penalty area, it found Muto's feet and the striker hammered the effort home to take the two-nil lead at Old Trafford!
Y. Muto
Goal
10' GOALLLLL!!! THE VISITORS HAVE SCORED AGAIN! IT'S MUTO ON HIS FULL PREMIER LEAGUE DEBUT! He collected Shelvey's pass in the ball in the middle of the box, turned well, lost his defender and finished it seemingly straight through De Gea! Manchester United 0-2 Newcastle.
Ayoze Pérez
Assist
7' Perez was passed the ball from a throw-in, he found himself in a pocket of space and deliver a perfect through ball to Kenedy on the run, and the Brazilian finished the chance smartly!
Kenedy
Goal
7' GOOALLL!!! IT seemingly came from nothing, but Kenedy went on a splendid run off the ball, Ayoze found him with a perfectly weighted ball, and the Chelsea loanee coolly curls his shot into the bottom left corner of the goal! Manchester United 0-1 Newcastle.
5' Lukaku fouls Perez near the centre circle and Newcastle will take the first free-kick of the match!
3' Matic and Pogba combine to win the ball back in midfield and the latter plays Martial up the left wing to start a counter-attack that fails in the end.
1' Referee Anthony Taylor's whistle sounds, and we're underway at Old Trafford!
The teams are now walking out of the
